How do I get the most out of Nicorette Gum?

Nicorette should be chewed and parked each time you feel the urge to smoke a cigarette. Nicotine is absorbed through the lining of the mouth when you chew. Make sure that you follow the correct chewing technique recommended, which is the chew-park-chew method. Chew gum slowly until taste becomes strong. Rest gum between gum and cheek. Chew gum again until taste has faded.

What are the active ingredients?

Nicotine 2mg.  Also contains Xylitol (0.31g per piece of gum).  Products containing Xylitol may have a laxative effect or cause diarrhoea.  Does not contain saccharin/ aspartame/ sucrose/ lactose or gluten.

How do I use it?

Nicorette Gum is available in 2mg and 4mg strengths. The strength you choose depends on your own individual needs. However it is recommended that you begin treatment with the 2mg strength. If you find you require more than 15 pieces of 2mg each day, you may wish to try the 4mg.

NICORETTE Regular Strength Gum (2mg) Weaning Programme
Step 1 - take 4-6 pieces of nicorette gum per day  for the first 12 weeks
Step 2 - take 2-3 pieces of nicorette gum per day for the next 2 weeks
Step 3 - take 1-2 pieces of nicorette gum per day gradually reducing to zero, which should run for the next 2 weeks

NICORETTE Extra Strength Gum (4mg) Weaning Programme

Step 1 - take 4-6 pieces of nicorette gum per day for the first 12 weeks
Step 2 - take 2-3 pieces of nicorette gum per day for the next 2 weeks
Step 3 - take 1-2 pieces of nicorette gum per day gradually reducing to zero, which should be completed for 2 weeks

When you have completely overcome your desire for smoking, gradually reduce the number of pieces chewed each day. Do not attempt to stop using Nicorette completely until you are satisfied with only one or two pieces a day. It is recommended that Nicorette be used for three months before this gradual reduction is started. It is during the first three months that the risk of failure is greatest. Remember to carry some Nicorette with you after you have stopped smoking in case you feel a sudden urge to smoke again.

Are there any warnings or precautions?

Not suitable for children. All forms of nicotine should be avoided during pregnancy. Smokers who wear dentures may find it difficult to chew Nicorette. Patients with gastritis, peptic ulcer, angina or who have had coronary heart disease should discuss the use of Nicorette with their doctor. Keep out of reach of children. Store below 25 degrees Celsius.
